Burns on the 4th, it’s going to happen!

So, the 4th of July is upon us.  Happy Birthday America!  Who’s ready for the festivities that we all love about the fourth?  I know I certainly am!

I have my favorite American Flag shirt ready to go, (one for the day and one for the night of course).  Looking forward to my Hotdog, some Barbecue, some fireworks, some burns..  Wait, burns???  We’ll, yes, guess as sure as dogs are going to be hiding when the popping starts people are going to get burned tonight!

Guess the question is what to do when it actually happens?  The most important thing you can do to be prepared by take a First Aid class from the Red Cross or American Heart Association.  Obviously if you find your yourself in the situation of a burn and you need help, dial 911 and seek help from local Paramedics.

As for some first responder type pointers, here are some things to remember.  Keep it simple, for basic minor burns, flowing water on it and cooling the affected areas will be most helpful. Applying all the various “oh try this on a burn” home remedies make it worst as it insulates the burned area and doesn’t cool it down.  The running water cools the affected area.  After cooling the affected area with water, you can pick your favorite burn gel or cream and then apply it.  Water-Jel is most beneficial for more severe burns as that jel hydrates the burn and cools it immediately upon application!

So, there you have it, the best thing you can do is be safe and follow all the suggestions for enjoying your fireworks.  Keep a watchful eye on kids (big kids too) and have a plan for if something goes wrong.  Enjoy the day, enjoy your friends and family, and remember to enjoy that Hotdog!
